Are you good at languages?
Do you come from a disadvantaged background?
The Job Creation Trust has created an opportunity for students
from disadvantaged communities to learn a foreign language.
The course is one year and will be held in Johannesburg, at
the University of the Witwatersrand Language School.
Graduates will be well positioned to seek employment in the
tourism industry, with foreign companies operating in South
Africa or with South African companies operating in foreign
countries.
Students will be taught French. German, Spanish, Portuguese
or Mandarin. The language course will be accompanied by a
course in life skills. Students will graduate with a recognised
qualification.
The course will run from February to November 2009, with
a break in mid-year. Secure, monitored accommodation will
be provided. Counsellors are available to help with any problems.
The entire language scholarship programme is funded by the
Job Creation Trust and includes language tuition, a life skills
programme, accommodation and food. Families of students will
be expected to support them where they can. Students will
be required to participate in community service projects.
